MANILA, Aug. 10 (Xinhua) -- Two army soldiers were killed and three others wounded on Friday in a clash with Leftist rebels in Isabela, a province in the Philippines' Luzon Island north of capital Manila, the military said.

The military said rebels attacked troops on patrol at 4:47 a.m. local time in a village in Jones town.

In the central Philippine Northern Samar province, police said suspected leftist rebels numbering about 100 attacked a police station in Lapinig town around 1:44 a.m. also on Friday.

At least two policemen were injured "in the looting and shooting" that lasted 15 minutes, police said.

Police said the rebels carted away 10 high-powered firearms, three handguns, an undetermined number of ammunition, a desktop, a laptop and a mobile phone.

The Philippine government has suspended negotiating peace with the leftist rebels, accusing the insurgents of using the talks to consolidate its ranks.

The Philippine military said the NPA has an estimated 4,000 members. The rebels have been fighting the government since 1969 in one of Asia's longest-running insurgencies.

The government has been trying to forge peace with the leftist rebels since 1986 but the on-off talks have faltered many times in the past.
