YAOUNDE, March 17 (Xinhua) -- Theodore Datouo, a lawmaker from the ruling Cameroon People's Democratic Movement (CPDM), was elected speaker of Cameroon's National Assembly on Tuesday.
He secured 133 of 147 votes during an elective plenary sitting held in the capital, Yaounde, with 14 ballots declared invalid, according to results released by the National Assembly.
The 66-year-old new speaker succeeds Cavaye Yeguie Djibril, a senior CPDM figure who had served as speaker since 1992.
Prior to his election, Datouo served as deputy speaker of the National Assembly. ■
