LUSAKA, Jan. 12 (Xinhua) -- Zambia's electoral body said on Monday that it is in the final stages of preparatory work to undertake the delimitation of constituencies ahead of the August general elections.
Brown Kasaro, chief electoral officer of the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ), said the delimitation exercise, which aims to divide some large constituencies, will be conducted with the full participation of all relevant stakeholders.
He said the exercise is expected to be completed before the certification of the register of voters, scheduled for April 30, in line with the commission's roadmap.
"The commission assures stakeholders that it is treating the delimitation exercise with the urgency it deserves to ensure that it is completed prior to the certification of the 2026 register of voters," he said in a statement.
Currently, Zambia has 156 constituencies.
The delimitation of constituencies is provided for under Zambia's amended Constitution and is intended to address the challenge of overly large constituencies to enhance development and representation.
Zambia is scheduled to hold general elections in August 2026. ■
