BUENOS AIRES, Jan. 9 (Xinhua) -- The Central Bank of Argentina said Friday that it has repaid the tranche of the currency swap agreed with the U.S. Department of the Treasury last October, under a 20 billion U.S. dollars "exchange-rate stabilization agreement."

In a statement, the monetary authority said the repayment "was carried out in December, under the exchange-rate stabilization agreement for 20 billion U.S. dollars announced on Oct. 20, 2025."

The amount repaid totaled about 2.5 billion U.S. dollars, local media reported, citing the U.S. Treasury's Exchange Stabilization Fund Monthly Financial Statement released last October.

"The objective of this agreement is to contribute to Argentina's macroeconomic stability, with special emphasis on preserving price stability and promoting sustainable economic growth," said the statement.

The repayment was also announced by U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent on the social platform X.

"I am pleased to announce that, reflecting its strengthened financial position, Argentina has quickly and fully repaid its limited drawing on the swap with the United States, so the Exchange Stabilization Fund currently holds no pesos," Bessent said.
