BAGHDAD, Aug. 18 (Xinhua) -- Iraqi President Abdul Latif Rashid met on Monday with the Special Representative of the United Nations (UN) Secretary-General for Iraq Mohamed al-Hassan to discuss bilateral cooperation.
Their talks focused on Iraq's political and developmental landscape, highlighting the UN's important role in supporting Iraq's stability, democratic progress, and sustainable growth, the Iraqi presidency said in a statement.
The two sides stressed the importance of enhancing coordination to advance peace, prosperity, and long-term development, read the statement.
Al-Hassan, who also heads the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), said the UN "remains steadfast in its support for Iraq across all sectors and will continue close cooperation to advance the country's development objectives, while actively supporting efforts to reinforce stability and promote sustainable progress," it added.
A UN Security Council resolution issued in May 2024 requires UNAMI's withdrawal from Iraq by Dec. 31, following a request from the Iraqi government. ■
