BRASILIA, Aug. 13 (Xinhua) -- Brazil's Supreme Federal Court on Wednesday elected Edson Fachin as its next chief justice, replacing Luis Roberto Barroso.

In a symbolic vote, Fachin received 10 of 11 possible votes. Alexandre de Moraes was elected his deputy with the same tally, following the court's tradition that no justice votes for themselves.

Fachin, who joined the court in 2015 after being nominated by then-President Dilma Rousseff, said he takes the role with "a sense of mission" and a commitment to dialogue and collegiality. He will assume the post on Sept. 29 and will also lead the National Council of Justice, which represents the judiciary.

Moraes, who was sanctioned under the U.S. Magnitsky Act over his role in the trial of former President Jair Bolsonaro for an alleged coup attempt, called the appointment "an honor and a joy." ■
